Children of Africa (Sept-Oct 2007)

By Shae Elliott

The Luweero region in Eastern Uganda was a base for the guerilla war that brought the current President of Uganda into power.  Because of conflict in this region, education standards are very low and there are large numbers of orphans and neglected children.

Last month *IBS-STL Uganda, in partnership with Compassion International, trained 60 teachers from 20 churches in Luweero to conduct our “Children of Africa” program.  After our training seminar, a teacher, Namubiru Jenipher, said “Thank you IBS-STL Uganda for teaching us in this workshop.  We were badly off in the area of helping the children in Sunday school.”  The program, comparable to “Children 4 Christ” in other areas of the world, teaches children the value of God’s Word.  We know biblical instruction at an early age impacts lives presently and for many years to come.

According to Mrs. Jessica Masanganzira, Special Projects Specialist for Compassion International in Uganda, “This workshop has had impact on the lives of the people who came for it.  They are willing to put into practice what they have learnt, and this is going to be the first time effective Sunday schools will be established in this part of the country.  I am grateful to IBS-STL for a ministry well accomplished and we look forward to continued partnership in training more laborers.”

Also during June, 200 pastors from Mbarara, Ntungamo, and Masaka Districts in Uganda attended IBS-STL’s “Back 2 the Bible” workshop.  The seminar equips pastors to read, preach, teach, memorize, and practice the Word of God.  Leaders of the Redeemed Churches in Western Uganda and Family to Family Christian Ministries in Mbarara helped organize the seminars.

Pastor Kashaija, from Mbarara District said, “When I was informed of this workshop, I could not miss the opportunity.  I rode my bicycle from the local church about 50 kilometers to attend this workshop.  I have not regretted it.”

Pastor Ndiromwe said, “I am glad I came for this Bible training and have been touched by your kind gesture of teaching us and availing some literature to us.  May the Lord bless you.  We in Mbarara need your help in bible teaching.”

*IBS-STL has built and funded a church, called St. Luke’s Church, through Compassion International in the remote village of Ciangera, Kenya, Africa.  STL is currently raising funds to drill a well in the village.  The well will draw more people to the Ciangera church and give workers the opportunity to lead more souls to Christ.
